Sergei was born in Russia on December 5, 1969. He was drafted in as Detroit's 4th pick and 74th overall in the 1989 Entry Draft. Last season, Sergei was first on the Red Wings in points/goals/assists. He won the Selke Trophy for the NHL's top Defensive Forward. He was tied for eighth in scoring in the NHL. He reached the 100 point plateau for the second time in three seasons and set a new club record for game winning goals in a season with 11. He was plus or even in 64 of 78 games. He collected his 500th career point on March 8 at Colorado. Sergei also played in last year's NHL All-Star game in Boston. In his career, Sergei had top honors in the 1993-94 season by winning the Hart Trophy as the NHL's MVP and is the only European player to do so. He was second in scoring and second in plus minus at 48. Sergei also made the All Rookie Team in his rookie season, 1990-91, after pacing the rookies in goals, assists, and points. He had a power play goal in his first NHL game on October 4 at New Jersey. He came to Detroit in July of 1990, after leaving the Soviet team in Portland, Oregon, before the Goodwill games in Seattle.
